He was a mere carpenter's son
To give his life selflessly
No other man could do his job
He hadn't any selfish needs
Many songs sing glory to him -Jake Munson, December, 1991 |

Games
Thinking of the games we played.
Marbles, cans, slippers, balls.
Now, we are supposed to know better.
Now we are puny, dependent and weak.
Let us go back to the games we played. |

My friend the vegetable fried himself today. He used the excuse of "ritual" when confronted with the television cameras. His mom was very upset to learn that he had more ideas than he had been instructed to have. No more music for such impressionable ears, no more colors for such lazy eyes, no more motion for the hitch hiker. Yesterday lunch was okay and so was dinner, today breakfast was okay but lunch had tasted better somewhere else. Blinders are needed and in the form of a backhand they come. The freckles of mom's hand attach themselves to my vegetable friend's face and secretely climb into his eyes and nose. After an hour or so they reach the frontal lobe of his brain and fertilize it with some sort of all natural novacane. When the cage goes down mom's bosom turns to a bullseye, a blank page to be scribbled on, a podium to stand on. But without sunlight the freckles fade and my vegetable friend seems content with dinner. |
